How to safely & efficiently light a toasty fire for the colder seasons

For me, there is nothing better than putting on a roaring fire, then curling up with a good book a film on the tv when the season starts to turn.

There's something oh-so homely about a good old fashioned roaring fire warming the cockles of you and your family - here is how I prepare and light mine.

Start by layering up your scrunched newspaper, kindling, and some firelighters. I make these wonderful wax-covered scented pinecones which work an absolute treat - not only do they really get the fire going but they fill your home with the most beautiful scent. For this batch, I've used a spicy Christmas fragrance. Do pop me an email via charlie@askcharlie.how if you would like any details on how to purchase a bag of these!

Next up, the lighting. Always strike the match away from yourself for safety. Light the paper, and throw the match into the fire carefully.

Make sure that the flue is open initially so that you're not at risk of blowing smoke into the room. Of course, later on, do close it down a little to keep the heat in.

I do think it's very important to have a safety guard, so if you have one, pop it on now. This does protect children, animals and even spitting from the fire onto your floor.

One can enjoy a wood fire worthily only when he warms his thoughts by it as well as his hands and feet.

I hope this helps keep you and your loved ones toasty and warm!
