The safe way to wash your woollens this winter

It's getting chilly! So out come the woollens...and where there are woollens, there is handwashing.

Here's my foolproof way to ensure you're not left with doll-sized woollens!

I wash all of my woollens in the sink, and my cleaning weapon of choice is Woolite. It is so important that you don't use your standard washing detergents as these can actually rot the fibres of your fabrics.

I actually don't use the woollen wash on my washing machine because, even at 20 degrees, I consider it just too warm for the fabrics. It is much, much safer to wash in the sink first, then slow spin in the washing machine to finish.

Half fill your sink with water, then pour your half cap of Woolite straight in. Add your jumpers to this and give them a good swish to get them nice and saturated.

Any nasty marks can be rubbed gently together to remove, before leaving the entire lot to sit and soak for about 5 minutes before we give them a good rinse.

After your 5 minutes is up, drain away the water and give your garments a good rinse in cold water. Give them a good squeeze, then pop them into the washing machine to spin once on slow.

Once your washing machine has worked it's magic, take out your freshly washed woollens and leave them to dry naturally - and we're done!

We should all do what, in the long run, gives us joy, even if it is only picking grapes or sorting the laundry.
