How to give your hardworking fireplace a good clean and treat your roses too...

Our fire has had an awful lot of use over the holidays and the ashtray is really, really full.

I'm going to show you how I clean it out with a little top tip for your roses too!

Always make sure the fire is completely and utterly out before you attempt to give it a clean.

Firstly...I pop on my trusty rubber gloves. These are from Lakeland and are my absolute favourite.

Take out any bits of wood that haven't fully burned and pop them to one side. Push down any extra ash into your ashtray below.

Pull out your ashtray to dispose of the ashes, but do keep some back! Roses absolutely love ash, so I head on out into the garden to sprinkle a nice amount at the base of each rose. Best to do this on a calm day otherwise you may end up covered from head to toe!

Any excess ash that doesn't make it to my roses, I take over to the bonfire site.

Once you've headed back inside, grab a dustpan and brush and an old washing up bowl to sweep up the bulk of the remaining ash.

Next up, grab the hoover! Start with the thinnest nozzle and get right into the corners to hoover up as much loose ash as you can. Then simply switch to the brush nozzle and give the fire and surround a final once over!

Sit back and enjoy your handiwork. You've successfully spruced up the home and cared for your roses!

Love,
