How to safely and effectively de-limescale your kettle with non-toxic citric acid...

Today I’m going to show you how to de-limescale kettle safely and effectively using citric acid.

Now don’t get me wrong, I do love Oust - I’ve been using it for years and think it does a great job. However, I am quite conscious of the environment and what goes down our drains so have tried to think of alternative ways, and this is one of my favourites.

I have some citric acid and distilled vinegar, today I’m going to show you how I de-limescale with the citric acid, a natural acid derived from citrus fruits.

You can buy citric acid in the chemist, I buy in bulk because I make a lot of elderflower cordial and it is great for preserving, to stop mould and bacteria forming.

Directions

Put a little water in kettle - enough to cover the heating element halfway down and all of the limescale present - normally this is about halfway full.

Open the citric acid and pour in 2 heaped teaspoons.

Turn on the kettle.

Leave lid of kettle open to keep an eye, you don’t want it to bubble over!

Watch the chemical reaction start to happen with the water and the citric acid.

As it begins to heat up it will bubble away nicely.

When the kettle is at boiling point, stop it boiling and leave it for 10 minutes to let the citric acid really get to work and break down that limescale, with no scrubbing!

Pour away your water. Limescale can get caught by the filter when you pour, so give that a good rinse too!

You can reboil if necessary for any pesky bits that may be leftover.

You should be left with a gleaming kettle and no worries about rinsing over and over before a cup of tea which is what really bothers me when using Oust! There is also no overpowering smell to contend with!

I am always really thrilled with the results, it does such a brilliant job, is really good for the environment, and you’ve poured no nasties down the sink.

I live in a hard water area so I do this every 3 months, but you can judge your frequency depending on how hard your water is.

Love,
