How I style my favourite wardrobe pieces and make them work for any event!
This week I was asked a question about what to wear to barbecues, summer parties and those kinds of occasions so that you didn't appear overdressed or underdressed. So, I thought I would share with you some of the things that I would wear!
There's nothing worse than feeling uncomfortable in what you're wearing. You've got to go out feeling confident and happy. Turning up at a party feeling over or underdressed can make you feel terribly self-conscious! I hope that by showing you some of my outfits for this Spring and Summer, you can see how even just adding the right accessories can elevate an outfit and ensure you feel good.
You can smarten up a pair of jeans simply by putting on a couple of different jackets, some heels or a smart clutch. I like to use one of my grandmothers, it's a simple small gold rectangular clutch, but it literally can take you anywhere. It easily slips under your arm and it's not offensive, but it's smarter than carrying a big tote.
Footwear is important, particularly if you're at a barbecue or a summer party outside, you don't want to be wearing heels with points. There's nothing worse than trying to creep around on your tippy-toes, believe me, I have been there! So I love wedges for the summer to smarten and glam up an outfit. I have several pairs from LK Bennett, Alberto Zago and Blue Velvet that work with a number of outfits.
Remember you can always mix and match your outfits too! Just change a top, a jacket and add a few different accessories to make a completely different look. Accessories are brilliant for switching up an outfit, handbags, jewellery, shoes and belts. Nowadays I get my belts from Peachy Belts for this reason - you can switch the buckle and belt strap to make a real array of combinations!
When you're shopping, think about versatile items, that you can get lots of different uses out of. Look for classic, investment pieces that you'd happily wear for years to come.
You've also got to think about getting cold and in England, the weather is so unpredictable that having a sleeve is a good idea. Make sure you're feeling really comfortable and really good in what you're wearing. If you are not feeling comfortable, change!
Plan your outfit so there's no last-minute panics, make sure you're feeling confident and happy. You will look so much better than if you're going to an event in an outfit that you feel uncomfortable in! If you're not feeling it, people will notice because you'll be giving off the wrong body language. If you're feeling good in something and you love it, you will look fantastic!
It's important to find your style and what works for you. People have said to me that I can wear anything, which is so flattering but trust me, I really, really, really can't wear everything! I've learned what works for me, what suits my style and my body shape.
So find what suits you, what works for you and then stick to that. I love wearing jeans with heels and a jacket. I feel confident and I could happily wear that outfit to lots of places. I also feel really happy in a dress, I love colour and I love having pockets!
Find your style and own it! Go for it, enjoy what you're wearing and enjoy playing with your clothes. Have a go at accessorizing and discovering new ways of styling things! Hopefully, by me chatting about dressing things up and dressing things down today, you can look at the clothes that you've got in your wardrobe and start to think about how you can elevate an outfit and feel really confident and good in it!
